Trinity Repertory Company has announced its 63rd season, which includes five shows in its subscription series and the theater’s 50th anniversary production of A Christmas Carol. Featuring one world premiere, two New England premieres, an American classic, and a reimagined canonical romance, this is the final season shaped by outgoing Artistic Director Curt Columbus, in partnership with incoming Artistic Director Meredith McDonough.
“I am so excited for Meredith’s first season as Artistic Director, and I loved collaborating on this theatrical lineup with her,” Columbus said. “It celebrates what has made Trinity Rep remarkable since its founding: a dedication to our resident company of artists; a focus on work that entertains, challenges and illuminates; and a commitment to our community here in Rhode Island and Southern New England.”
Adds McDonough, “The shows we’ve chosen are as smart as they are moving and are filled with the laughter of human experience. They center on people owning the power of their voices and opening themselves up to possibility—something that resonates across generations. This lineup is built for curious humans, with expanded programming for all ages, a true invitation for new and returning audiences alike. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Curt on shaping the season, and we’re excited to share it with our community.”
The season kicks off with the rolling world premiere of The Getaway Driver by Trinity Rep’s Playwright-in-Residence Deborah Salem Smith and Resident Company Member Charlie Thurston. The play is based on the true story of an activist whose work as a getaway driver for an armed robbery, and subsequent disappearance, resulted in the longest run of any woman on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. Outgoing Artistic Director Curt Columbus will direct the production, which runs Sept. 3 – Oct. 4, 2026. After closing at Trinity Rep, The Getaway Driver will move to Central Square Theater in Boston, followed by a staging in early 2027 at Northern Stage in White River Junction, VT.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens returns to Trinity Rep’s Dowling Theater this holiday season for its 50th anniversary. Resident Company Member Taavon Gamble will direct. Gamble last directed 2024’s hit musical La Cage aux Folles, and knows Dickens’ story well: he has performed in eight previous productions, most recently in 2025 as Mr. Fezziwig and the Ghost of Christmas Present. A Christmas Carol runs Nov. 5 – Dec. 31, 2026.
2027 begins with Cyrano by Jason O’Connell and Brenda Withers, adapted from Edmond Rostand’s classic French play of the same name. Incoming Artistic Director Meredith McDonough will make her Trinity Rep directorial debut with this mischievous, irreverent adaptation. The production runs Jan. 27 – Mar.18, 2027.
Fresh off the heels of an acclaimed Off-Broadway run, Mother Russia by Lauren Yee will complement Cyrano in a rotating repertory, directed by Resident Company Member Tatyana-Marie Carlo. Following two former wannabe KBG agents as they adapt to life after the fall of the Soviet Union, this New York Times Critic’s Pick comedy plays Feb. 11 – Mar. 21, 2027.
The iconic work of August Wilson, one of the most acclaimed American playwrights of the 20th century, returns to Trinity Rep’s stage with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. This powerful 1920s period drama, set during a tense recording session with the legendary Ma Rainey and her blues band, will play Apr. 8 – May 9, 2027.
The season concludes with Nothing Up My Sleeve…Simple Deceptions for Curious Humans, a part-magic show, part-memoir, fully unique theatrical experience by Aaron Posner and Dendy. A one-man show featuring Nate Dendy (The Narrator in 2025’s A Christmas Carol) and directed by Posner, Nothing Up My Sleeve pulls back the curtain on the history of magic while exploring Dendy’s own path to becoming a magician. This production runs May 27 – Jun. 27, 2027.
